The Surein Foundation (James & Fanny Kwan) Distinguished Lecture in Green Energy and Sustainable Technology 2026 was successfully held in the afternoon of 6 May 2026 at the University of Hong Kong, with around 50 participants in attendance.
The Foundation was honoured to invite Dr. Samuel Chui, Director, Environmental Protection Department, HKSAR Government, as the keynote speaker. In this talk, entitled “Modernising Environmental Impact Assessment through AI in Hong Kong”, Dr. Chui shared insights into the development of Hong Kong’s environmental database, as well as the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). By integrating big data and intelligent analytics, the platform has significantly enhanced the efficiency of EIA studies, shortening research timelines that previously took around four years, thereby reducing costs and accelerating project implementation.
Before the conclusion of the Lecture, the Surein Foundation invited Professor Nicholas X. Fang of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the University of Hong Kong, to present a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Chui on behalf of the Foundation, in recognition of his valuable contributions and efforts in advancing green energy development.
