Last weekend (April 11-13, 2025), the Surein Foundation organised an eco-farming educational tour (which had been suspended for four years due to various reasons) to the Mainland for some HK secondary school students. Participants included 23 teachers and students from “AD&FD POHK Leung Sing Tak College” (hereinafter referred to as Leung Sing Tak College). The co-organisers included Yuen Long Town Hall, OISCA International Hong Kong, Scout Association of Hong Kong Tsuen Wan District, Y’s Men’s Club of Northwest, and The Broad C Limited. The group of 32 enjoyed a packed three-day, two-night programme with fruitful learning experiences.
On Day 1, teachers and students of Leung Sing Tak College and co-organisers visited The Shenzhen Chenghan School in Buji, Shenzhen—a boarding school with a vast campus. Students from both schools engaged in conversations while touring the Herb Garden, Sports Complex, Grand Auditorium, The Art Gallery, and the Chenghan Museum. After the visit, they took lunch together in the school canteen, experiencing first-hand campus life.
In the afternoon, the group visited the "China Qiaodu Museum of Overseas Chinese" in Jiangmen, where everybody gained a deeper understanding of the contributions of overseas Chinese in the early 20th century.
On the way from Shenzhen to Xinxing, the tour bus travelled on several newly completed super- world-class infrastructure projects, such as the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, and the Huangmao Hai Cross-Sea Bridge. They were grand and amazing!
The second and third days were spent at the Surein Green Farm, Xinxing County, Yunfu City. Accommodation was in air-conditioned twin rooms at the "Surein Lodge," while meals were served at the Farm’s "Tea & Horse Station”. The menu featured homegrown, organic dishes that were readily available, hygienic, and delicious.
In the morning of Day 2, students held a solemn flag-raising ceremony at the Farm’s Flag Raising Post. Under the majestic National Anthem, the principal, teachers, and students witnessed the Study Flag-raising Party skilfully completed their missions, with the National flag, the Hong Kong SAR flag, and School flag fluttering in the wind.
This environmental-education exchange received high regard from the Xinxing County Education Bureau, the Committee on Caring for the Next Generation, and the county government. Over 20 officials, teachers, and students from Lidong Town Central Primary School and Lijiang Primary School joined, and engaged in cultural exchanges with the Hong Kong delegation. Together, they visited the Farm’s "Chinese Medicinal Herb Garden," where, under staff guidance, they studied and identified herbal plants transplanted from the Tianlu Mountain, and affixed the relevant name tags onto the posts beside them.
The objectives of this environmental-educational trip included the study of organic cultivation, sustainable development, experimenting farming and safe food production. Dr. Ernest Lee, a Director of the Surein Foundation, led students to the fruit tree plantation, speaking beside a mango tree, he talked about the close relationship between soil, environment, and fruit growth. Students picked ripe mulberries, green plums, and guavas, visited the "Loquat Honey Bee Farm” to observe honey extraction, and tasted honeycomb filled with fresh honey. They also watched farmers transplant seedlings in the paddy fields, noting the hard chore, thus understanding that ‘every grain on the meal plate was harvested with hard work’.
The Farm is home to ten horses, over forty goats, and two free-range poultry sheds, utilizing animal manure for composting to produce fertilisers for growing vegetables and fruits.
Students picked Tieguanyin tea leaves at the "Guanyin Tea Plantation" on the tea mountain, and observed tea masters demonstrating tea processing in the tea-making workshop.
On Day 3, students observed animal husbandry by feeding horses in the stable. They also enjoyed horse riding in the paddock — a first-time experience which was incredibly memorable!
Before departure from the Farm, students and Surein Foundation staff exchanged souvenirs. Students presented the Foundation with their two sketches of the Farm, the centre-pages were filled with heartfelt messages. In return, the Foundation presented each participant a "Fortune Bag" containing farm produce.
At 7 p.m. on Day 3, students and guests bid farewell at Leung Sing Tak College, cherishing their memories together!
