Surein Foundation continues to promote green education, including updating friends on the development of clean-energy vehicles and autonomous mass transit in the Mainland.
On Saturday, April 18, 2026, a technical visit to BYD Museum in Pingshan, Shenzhen, was organised for 45 friends from Hong Kong. The purpose was getting first-hand "Updates on Electric Vehicles in the Mainland" They also rode on the "SkyShuttle", BYD’s clean-energy autonomous rail transport system.
First Stop: BYD History Museum
In the Museum, we learned how BYD, founded 31 years ago, capitalised on its founder's vision and mission, and expanded from making mobile phone batteries into a global leader and manufacturer of new-energy vehicles, rail systems, energy storage, and electronics. Through exhibits, multimedia presentations, the Museum illustrated the contributions and achievements of China’s innovators, their achievements in low-carbon technology, emission reduction, and sustainable development. They deepened members' understanding of how green technology may changed urban living.
Second Stop: BYD "SkyShuttle"
The "SkyShuttle" is an autonomous, small-to-medium capacity electric smart rail system that runs on elevated tracks. It features low noise and zero emissions, thus is ideal as a feeder system between residential areas and city centres. On-board the SkyShuttle, friends of Surein Foundation experienced its smooth operations and enjoyed a 360-degree open view of the surrounding areas. One member remarked that while "SkyShuttle" and the Hong Kong Light Rail Systems each has its own merits in terms of land use, carrying capacity, and environmental virtues, he wondered if its climbing ability could be suitable for the hilly terrain and high population density of East Kowloon.
Final Stop: The SkyShuttle Control Centre
The day’s Visit concluded with a visit to the "heart" of SkyShuttle— its monitoring and control centre. We were shown the rail signalling and scheduling systems, scheduling arrangements, and emergency procedures. Simple and effective, it was an eye-opening experience for all.
This visit not only allows friends of Surein Foundation to gain first-hand knowledge of the rapid development of green and smart transport in the Mainland, it also inspires thoughts on the relationship between low-carbon travel, smart cities, innovative technology and sustainability.
This function is the 10th one in 2026, organised by Surein Foundation. The Foundation is committed to promoting green education and meaningful activities for the public.
